In January, the news media announced the discovery of computer processor vulnerabilities that affect almost all computers. The two vulnerabilities are named Spectre and Meltdown.
Microsoft, Apple, and other technology companies have released patches for the Meltdown problem. It is important that you make sure all available updates are installed on your computers, tablets, and phones.
The Spectre problem requires what is called a firmware update. Companies who make the processors (such as Intel), have released updated firmware for many computers. To apply the updates, go to your computer manufacturer’s website. Download and install the most recent BIOS update. (The ones for Spectre have a release date in 2018.)
There are currently no known exploits that take advantage of these vulnerabilities, but it is suggested that you plan to apply all patches that are available.
